Welcome to B.D. to M.D., a little blog I've decided to start to chronicle my journey from my current career as a band director to my new, lofty ambition of becoming a Doctor of Medicine. I want this blog to be an avenue through which former colleagues, students and families can check in on me occasionally and interact with me.

The song that came to me while writing this post was "Closing Time" by Semisonic, a song that came out when I was an eighth grader, and featured the memorable line: every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end. Being a band director for two years was a great thrill. I remember the day I was hired and the rush of emotion that came over me; It was a fantastic new beginning. I have learned a lot along the way and had a lot of fun these last two years, but lately I began to feel a strong calling to serve humanity in a new capacity. I adore music and will always enjoy teaching it to others and using its power to help people, but these last six months I've felt led to help people heal their bodies directly, through medicine.

Semisonic's line is quite apropos: some other beginning's end. The beginning of my band director career has to come to an end in order to begin my new journey. I'm writing this after just stepping off the podium for the final time. My heart is very heavy knowing that in just one week's time, it will all be over. Through the mournful cloud that this evening brings to my heart, though, shines bright beams of success. I won't ever regret accepting this job. I feel the band has made great strides in musicianship and is playing fantastically. My students will all grow up and move on, and next year they'll be led onto the field by a new director. But, I know that they have the foundation and potential to continue to grow and excel. I am so proud of them! I will always be proud of them and what we've achieved together.

Some other beginning's end. As one door closes, though, a new one opens. I'm heading back to where college all began for me, back to Ohio State. OSU is near-and-dear to my heart and I'm so pleased to be returning. I am really anxious to see what it's like being a student again after spending the last several years on the teaching end of the desk. I'm hoping that the wisdom I've accrued after being in the "real world" for a stretch will make me a more focused and determined student. I am full of hope and desire. I'm also very excited to share this journey with all of you, through this blog. I'll have more to share with you as time passes, but please feel free to comment on anything I post. You may also contact me via e-mail if you'd like.

Liberty Center, I'm indebted to you. Thank you for everything.

World, I'm ready for my new beginning.

One Response so far.

You were a great teacher and I'm glad to have been you student. I do not think anyone would have been as great as you were your first year. I already miss you and I haven't even fully graduated yet. :( I know you'll make a great doctor and I hope I will see you again someday (hopefully not because I need surgury or something like that). See you Sunday!
